Healthcare employers and educators began discussing healthcare issues important to the region in 2008. A comprehensive survey was conducted at that time, with a focus on the imminent retirement and departure of practitioners. Further discussions focused on the uniformity of student health work requirements. Informally, the group of interested employers focused future initiatives on advancing entry level healthcare employees into new, more challenging opportunities through an industry partnership grant. Another later grant focused on employing unemployed or underemployed job seekers in select occupations. As conversations continued, the North Central Wisconsin Healthcare Alliance (NCWHA) became formalized in 2013. The timeline below gives additional details of the history of NCWHA.

Through the efforts of numerous healthcare organizations, educational facilities and work readiness organizations, the NCWHA has evolved into a formal Alliance with a focus on creating and sustaining the superior future healthcare workforce.
